MSA supported the Project Architect for the design and construction of a new 2-story, 115,000-SF middle school in Isle of Wight County. The initial design accommodates 550 students, with future expansion possible for up to 800 students.

The new school was designed to include sustainable design elements, to include utilizing onsite wastewater treatment and disposal and utilizing rainwater harvesting for non-potable domestic use. Additionally, the initial school design included 32 solar panels to heat water in the kitchen and 360 geothermal wells that utilize the earth’s constant temperature to cost-effectively heat and cool the building. As a result of value engineering, these elements were eliminated from the final plans.

Civil engineering services included a demolition plan; erosion and sediment control plan; dimensional site layout plan; grading, drainage and utility plan; stormwater management plan; pavement design; right of way improvements; Stormwater Pollution Prevention Plan (SWPPP); and construction administration. A public sanitary sewer pump station and County force main were also designed to accommodate this project.

Land surveying services included topographic, boundary, and construction layout surveying, and preparation of easement exhibits and subdivision plats.

Environmental services included Environmental Impact Reports and soil testing to support engineering design of stormwater BMP facilities and drainfields.

Landscape architecture and planning services included development of layout plans for proposed plantings.

MSA also provided construction administration services.

The design allowed the existing middle school to remain open while the new facility was being constructed.
